How to use these examples in your annual review or development plan
These examples are models, not templates. The most effective nursing career goals are adapted to your specific situation — your current unit, your target role, your actual timeline, and your real constraints.
**When writing your annual review:** Choose 2–3 goals from the examples that match your current stage and track. Adapt each one to add your specific timeline (use real dates, not 'Q3' without a year), your specific credential, and the specific support you need from your employer.
**When building a development plan:** Start with your long-term goal (your destination) and work backwards. Which examples are relevant to where you're going, not just where you are now? A bedside RN targeting NP should be setting goals from the NP Track list, not just the Experienced RN list.
**The test for any nursing career goal:** Can you put it on a calendar? Can you tell someone exactly what done looks like? If not, make it more specific before committing to it.
